Summary

The Vice President, Enterprise Communications is responsible for driving CHS business strategies through effective communications and protecting and advancing the image and reputation of the enterprise with all stakeholders - internal and external - including current and prospective employees, customers, owners, preferred stockholders, the business and financial community, government and policy influencers and media.
This position works in close alignment with staff and business unit peers to develop communications strategies, plans and programs that support business goals and drive awareness and engagement with all stakeholders - helping to achieve the company’s purpose, deliver its strategies and live its values as the organization continues its commitment to growth on behalf of owners.
The VP is responsible for the development and execution of strategies to grow the company’s business (market share, preference, and brand awareness) through image and reputation management, corporate image marketing, and strategic, thought-leading messaging platforms that drive employee and owner engagement and enhance the enterprise’s image and reputation.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate strong skills in storytelling, writing and editing clear, concise, and compelling media and company materials, speeches, and briefs – quickly and under pressure.
  • Provide communications counsel and support to CHS Board of Directors; on behalf of the Board develop and deliver communications to owners.
  • Ensure consistent delivery of the CHS employment brand messages internally and externally and increase visibility of CHS as an employer of choice.
  • Provide communications counsel to the senior leadership team and the CEO.
  • Develop, mobilize, and motivate a team of diverse, highly creative and talented professionals to deliver stated objectives.
  • Develop a comprehensive communications plan for the CEO and ensure that the CEO’s vision and messaging is clearly and consistently communicated to all stakeholders. Ensure delivery of internal and external CEO communications (e.g., board meetings, townhalls, media) and function-specific communication to all employees (e.g., internal announcements).
  • Enhance the company’s image and reputation as a global agricultural and energy thought leader on issues of relevance to CHS and its owners. Identify opportunities for CHS to develop and demonstrate thought leadership that supports and enhances its image and reputation. Develop and deliver strategies for engaging stakeholders, including relevant media.
  • Identify and engage key external partners to support CHS in delivering compelling communications and brand experiences to stakeholders. These relationships include marketing, advertising, public relations and digital agencies and events management agencies and vendors.
  • Lead the planning and execution of company events (in-person and virtual) that demonstrate the value of CHS and cooperative ownership. Events include annual owner meeting to conduct cooperative governance, report financial and business results; series of in-person and virtual owners forums held throughout the year; top customer engagement event and leadership development conferences for cooperative owners, including event experiences tailored to next-generation cooperative owners.
  • Lead CHS’s corporate brand positioning and company messaging, ensuring clarity, relevance, differentiation, and sustainability among key (internal/external) stakeholders.
  • Direct, lead and measure effectiveness of all corporate image and communications strategies and plans for all stakeholders.
  • Ensure that all communications at the corporate and business unit level consistently reflect CHS’s purpose and values and adhere to brand standards and key messaging platforms. Ensure communication strategies are forward-thinking, engaging, and support and enhance the company’s strategic direction.
  • Lead financial reporting communications in partnership with Finance and Legal, including quarterly SEC filing and related internal and external communications.
  • Protect the company’s image and reputation through proactive crisis and issues response.
  • Plan, manage and track the Enterprise Communications annual budget, ensuring appropriate investment levels based on CHS business objectives and demonstrate value achieved through ROI analysis of investment.
  • Stay current on advances in communications technology and digital channels and ensure that the CHS communications program continues to leverage new technology and online channels effectively.

Minimum Qualifications (required)

  • Significant experience in developing and leading effective teams for desired performance. Ability to inspire the function in support of the CHS purpose “Creating Connections to Empower Agriculture” and generate excitement and alignment in support of business goals.
  • Exceptional relationship-building skills, including integrity, inclusiveness, empathy, courage, and collaboration.
  • Strong project planning, implementation, and measurement experience, including ability to manage a wide range of projects simultaneously and achieve desired results on time and within budget.
  • Highly developed critical thinking/analysis skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to use communications technology effectively and leverage social media and digital channels to deliver on key business objectives.
  • Demonstrated credibility and maturity and ability to provide strategic counsel, coaching and support to executives and the C-suite.
  • Demonstrated skill and success in developing and delivering a wide range of communications strategies including corporate brand and reputation development, advertising, public relations, media relations, social and digital media, corporate communications to drive awareness, engagement, preference, and loyalty.
  • Innovative, strategic thought leader with a demonstrated expertise in developing and leading strategic communications plans to advance business objectives.
  • Demonstrated ability to build, lead, manage and mentor a communications team. A builder of organizational capability by identifying skills needed on the team and recruiting and developing staff that delivers and enhances CHS image and reputation. Leads by example in making talent development a key priority, setting the tone for the rest of the function.
  • 15+ years’ experience in a senior communications management role, holding progressively responsible leadership positions in a broad-based communications function, with responsibility for managing enterprise-level image and reputation.
  • Exceptional oral and written communications skills. Ability to give concise, compelling verbal presentations to senior decision-makers, and to respond quickly and thoughtfully to challenges and opportunities.

Additional Qualifications

  • Industry (agricultural products, energy, foods) experience, while potentially helpful, is not required.
  • Understanding of owner / stakeholder driven environments and/or cooperative business structures is helpful but not required.
