GENERAL SUMMARY:

Snider Hockey is a nationally acclaimed non-profit that uses the sport of hockey to educate and empower under-resourced youth of Philadelphia to prosper in the game of life. Evidence-based outcomes are young citizens who:

• Consistently make healthy and thoughtful life choices;
• Serve as positive role models to the next generation of Snider Hockey student-athletes;

The Travel Ice Hockey Coach position at Snider Hockey is tasked with providing on and off-ice support to students that participate in Snider Hockey’s competitive travel program. Snider Hockey has travel teams at all USA Hockey youth age classifications that participate in the Delaware Valley Hockey League (DVHL) and Mid-Atlantic Women’s Hockey Association (MAWHA).

Coaches for travel teams are in charge of ensuring developmental standards are met and to make sure that every participant is provided a safe environment to learn a new skill. Candidates must also work to instill Snider Hockey’s core values into their daily work with all students. Coaches are also expected to communicate weekly with families of students on the team to assure maximum attendance at all team events. Ideal candidates would be team players, have a desire to make a difference in the lives of young people and the ability to effectively teach the game of ice hockey, and a passion for helping players develop to the next level.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Attention to detail and strong communication skills are critical.
• All instructors are expected to serve as teachers and role models both on and off the ice, and must, therefore, exhibit maturity and professionalism.
• Applicants must be able to commit to a minimum of two one-hour evening practices a week in Philadelphia and weekend games in the tri-state area.
• Hiring is conditional on the successful completion of a criminal background check; applicants should also either possess or be able to attain required background clearances and USA Hockey coaching certification.
• Candidates must possess significant ice hockey coaching and/or playing experience.
• Applicant must be reliable and possess both a general willingness to assume any and all jobs and an ability to work in a high-profile environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

• Foster a supportive learning atmosphere for all Snider Hockey participants.
• Cooperate and communicate with Snider Hockey staff and volunteers to help deliver a consistently excellent experience for all participants.
• Ensure the safety of all participants both on and off the ice.
• Promote positive character development of Snider Hockey participants by discussing the importance of education, teamwork, effort, respect, and related values.
• Lead team practices (minimum 2x a week) and weekend games (1-2 a weekend).
• Assist in the sizing, provision, and distribution of equipment; confirm that all players wear properly fitting equipment on the ice.

INTELLECTUAL AND SOCIAL DEMANDS:

While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee is continuously asked to multi-task under time limits and maintain emotional control under stress. The position requires constant attention to precise details and specified standards including: following simple to complex (more than three steps) instructions, and concentration which frequently extends beyond 30 minutes at a time.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the essential functions of the job, the employee is frequently required to walk, stand, skate, stick handle, balance, stoop, kneel, bend and use repetitive motions. Occasionally moves about inside storage areas to access equipment, cabinets, and office machinery. Occasional pushing, pulling, lifting, and/or moving up to 50 pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The essential responsibilities of this position are performed indoors, mainly at ice hockey rinks but including occasional visits to the office and special event sites (indoor/outdoor in the weather conditions prevalent at the time). The noise level in the work environments can range from moderate to loud during events/programs and is minimal during non-event/program times.

SCHEDULE:

Most work is completed during evening hours as well as weekend hours mostly for Home & Away games or holiday tournaments in and around the Greater Philadelphia area.
