Job Description
Description of Work Salary Grade: NC06 / Recruitment Range: $32,460 - $56,806 "Internal Posting - Only Permanent NCDOT Employees or layoff candidates with the NC Department of Transportation eligible for RIF priority reemployment consideration as described by GS 126 May Apply." This is an Advanced Level Roadside Environmental position that consists of a wide range of job responsibilities. Responsible for all seeding operations within the division, including the seeding of all wildflower beds. Responsibilities with seeding include plowing, cultipacking, fertilizing, liming, and mulching. Responsibilities with wildflower bed seeding require plowing, tilling, dyna-driving, spraying pre and post emergent herbicides, fertilizing, liming, mulching, mowing, and pulling of weeds. Will also require duties to be performed during emergency operations and snow and ice removal. Responsibilities in assisting in maintaining landscaped plant beds across division, including planting, mowing, spraying, and pulling weeds, mowing grass and maintaining yards at all NCDOT facilities. Position participates in the daily Operational Risk Management program including participation in daily tailgate safety meetings and performing Pre-Trip inspections on equipment each morning before leaving for the work site. Position is responsible for their Personal Protective Equipment (PPE's) dependent upon the nature of the work performed. Follows all applicable standard operating procedures (SOP's). In the absence of the Supervisor, this employee will be expected to lead the crew in their daily work activities. Work will include seeding, plant bed maintenance, mulching, wildflower bed maintenance, herbicide spraying, and rest area maintenance as needed. Employee must establish a safe working atmosphere and comply with the NCDOT Safety Policies. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies Qualified applicants must submit an application thatCLEARLYreflects work experience that demonstrates the following:
  • Experience leading subordinates and directing the daily activities of a work crew Additional Expectations: Ability to operate assigned equipment efficiently and safely. Experience in applications of pesticides, seeding operations, plant bed installations and maintenance. Ability to follow, understand and carry out instructions. Keep accurate records of work accomplished. Safely operate State vehicle. Safety toe footwear is required. Employee must have the ability to traverse steep and uneven terrain. Employee must have the ability to lift 50 pounds. Employee must be able to work in extreme temperature conditions. May require work during non-traditional work hours, including nights, weekends, holidays, and times of emergency. Duties and functions must be performed with minimal direct supervision.Pre-employment drug testing will be required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past two years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT drug testing and Post offer employment evaluation. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements High school or General Educational Development diploma and five years of experience operating equipment directly related to the area of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Requirements: Either possession of a current Commercial Driver's License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver's License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.   • Knowledge of vegetation management including but not limited to shrubs, trees, fertilizer, etc. using sound horticultural practices
  • Experience in operation of computer controlled pesticide application equipment
  • Experience in operation of pesticide applicator, truck, tractors, and utility vehicles
  • Experience in correctly applying herbicides and pesticides in accordance with the label, as well as proper storage and disposal techniques
