Job Description

The Senior Sterile Processing and Surgical Technician Lead will supervise and coordinate the daily operations of the Sterile Processing and Surgery Department. Ensures the appropriate staffing and equipment readiness needs are met. Under supervision of the Director, coordinates, plans and assigns workloads and manages employee activities, time reporting, and scheduling. Acts as a resource and ensures excellent customer service and effective operations. Specific supervisory duties include employee coaching, training and performance assessment processes; implementing workplace changes; and participating on performance improvement projects. Serves as a role model and resource to colleagues, staff, and others.

Job Responsibilities/Duties

  • Provides hospital and affiliate facilities with processed materials and equipment ensuring proper decontamination, cleaning, inspection, assembly and packaging of medical/surgical equipment to standards. Maintains a sterile and functioning supply of surgical equipment. Ensures infection control procedure compliance. Demonstrates expert knowledge of instrumentation, and equipment used for sterilization, biologicals, protocols, and supplies. Discerns the difference in surgical instruments.
  • Ensures appropriate staffing levels. Oversees contract labor, including appropriate credentialing, orientation and evaluation. Responsible for scheduling/staffing, coaching, training, hiring, firing, counseling, performance evaluations and competencies, and payroll process. Effectively manages staff in compliance with applicable regulatory bodies, and all established policies, procedures and legal guidelines.
  • Provides effective oversight and guidance of staff and operations to ensure quality, including audits of activities and documentation. Demonstrates problem-solving, critical thinking, and prioritization of work to resolve issues as they arise in an appropriate and timely manner. Acts as a coach and positive role model for staff by establishing and maintaining a safe work environment that fosters positive morale.
  • Troubleshoots and resolves issues as they occur. Demonstrates advanced level of expertise, strong leadership and collaborative skills in dealing with staff and members of the healthcare team. Completes daily assignments and ensures work is complete.
  • Oversees and coordinates the daily operations of the Surgery department and sterile processing department and demonstrates advanced level of expertise. Ensures compliance with applicable policies, regulations, and standards of AAMI/AORN.

Qualifications

Minimum Education: High School Diploma or equivalent required. Graduated from an accredited program for Sterile Processing Technician and/or Surgical Technologist with certification for SPD required.

Minimum Experience: Five (5) years of experience in a Surgery Department/OR Department with a minimum of two (2) years in a leadership role as First Assistant or Surgical Technician required. Ability to maintain flexibility and composure in a constantly changing environment. Ability to read, write and communicate effectively in English. Strong time management skills and ability to effectively prioritize tasks. Computer literacy and proficiency. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within the organization

Req. Certification/Licensure: Certification for SPD required. Hospital Fire and Life Safety Card (Los Angeles City Employees only) required. Certification in Aseptic technique preferred.
