The Office of the Assessor is currently seeking a highly qualified and specialized Special Assistant, Assessor-Field Deputy (UC) to join our Executive Office. The Field Deputy will work under the direction of the Chief of Public Affairs and aid in the development and implementation of the Office's public affairs initiatives. This includes assisting in the management of internal/external communications, in addition to both government and community relations for the Office of the Assessor. You will also be responsible for assisting the Executive Office in ensuring that information, materials and messaging is delivered in a manner that is clear, accurate, and consistent with the Office's mission and values.
Examples of duties:
Community Outreach
- Coordinates special events, including information and resource seminars
- Attends various community events with the Assessor or on the Assessor's behalf
- Works with local elected and appointed officials to promote office programs and services
- Creates social media content
- Coordinates logistics for Assessor's public events
- Coordinates public education campaigns for office programs and initiatives
- Writes speeches and talking points
- Public speaking on behalf of the Assessor at community events, including educational briefings
External Communications
•Coordinates with/supervises vendor activities, including graphic designers, printers and developers.
•Assists with the development of educational and promotional materials.
•Maintains, evaluates and updates materials used for presentations.
•Attends community meetings and events as a representative of the Assessor’s Office, when appropriate, for the purpose of advancing communications goals and building positive relationships with taxpayers.
•Plans and coordinates print and web-based publications including selecting and preparing material for brochures, handouts and public information materials.
•Promotes the Office and speaks to community groups about the Office’s programs, activities, and services.
•Manages and updates website and social media content.
Internal Communications
• Reviews communication policies and procedures and makes recommendations to encourage effective communication with employees, labor representatives and taxpayers.
• Writes and edits employee newsletters, Annual Report, talking points, presentations and other materials.
• Assists with sensitive assignments and projects as directed.
• Ensures consistent design guidelines across all web, internal, and external printed materials and platforms.
• Assists with the development and implementation of employee morale and team building activities.
• Prepares and delivers responses to inquiries from other County departments, including the Board of Supervisors, Auditor-Controller, and Treasurer and Tax Collector.
Media Relations
• Develops and implements a comprehensive media strategy.
• Coordinates the Office’s response to media inquiries and issues.
• Builds positive relationships with media representatives/journalists and provide them with appropriate information.
• Drafts and edits press releases, speeches, statements and media advisories.
• Maintains media contact database.
• Maintains a library of Office statements, press releases, advisories, clips etc.
• Monitors state and local legislation and researches, develops and articulates the Office’s position.

Who you are
You are a candidate holding a valid Class C Driver's License with a Bachelor's Degree in Communications, Journalism and/or Marketing, and have two (2) years of full-time paid experience involving extensive public contacts in connection with a wide variety of governmental offices and community associations.
(Your experience includes dealing with individuals or groups representing a wide range of community interests.)
You should possess the following desirable skills or experience:
• Ability to compose letters, speeches, press releases and other written correspondence in a clear and concise manner
• Experience with various online marketing tools such as MailChimp, Constant Contact or VerticalResponse
• Knowledge of Social Media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.
• The ability to effectively prioritize assignments, proficiently multi-task, and provide excellent customer service
• Strong analytical and interpersonal skills
• Conscientious and reliable, with good work ethics
• Fluency in a language other than English
