Senior Scientist, Cancer Immunology
Gaithersburg, MD
We are seeking a highly motivated Senior Scientist who has an extensive scientific expertise in cancer immunology/immunotherapy. A successful candidate will have substantial experience in studying T cells and myeloid cells both in vivo and in vitro, independently design and execute projects/experiments, troubleshoot and optimize methods, as well as generate, interpret and report scientific data clearly and concisely. Candidate should hold PhD in Immunology or related field and have a proven postdoctoral record with strong publications. Strong expertise with mouse tumor models is desirable.
As a Senior Scientist in our Oncology R&D department, you will be a key member of a team focused designing novel therapeutics to target myeloid biology and support projects through drug discovery and development process. You will bring your theoretical and practical expertise in immunology to establish assay systems and deliver datasets that will have direct impact on immune-oncology therapeutics.

What Does This Role Involve?
- Ensures own work and work of peers is compliant with Good Laboratory Practice, Safety, Health and Environment standards and all other relevant internal AstraZeneca standards and external regulations
- Maintains a well-developed understanding of approaches to investigate the function of myeloid cells and aspects of drug discovery
- Independently conducts cancer immunology and drug discovery research experiments using techniques in immunology, molecular and cellular biology
- May be asked to lead or co-lead a project team and contribute to scientific publication goals
- Assesses and reports data with little guidance in a clear and concise manner with a strong understanding of its implications within the overall context of drug discovery
- Is an active member of the team liaising between programs/departments and sharing scientific knowledge and feedback on other’s experiments to ensure the efficient relay of information and translation of data
Essential Skills and Capabilities
- Extensive experience in studying T cells or myeloid cells: MDSC, macrophages, dendritic cells
- Excellent organizational and communication skills
- A PhD, or equivalent experience, in immunology and cancer biology
- Strong hands-on skills in basic biochemical and immunological methods including multi-color flow cytometry (FACS), ELISA/multiplex assays, western blotting, luminescence assays, cell killing assays, high content imaging.
- Ability to work in a high paced team environment, plan and meet timelines
- Proven track record of success in your research, and experience preparing written scientific reports (eg, manuscripts) and oral presentations to broad and diverse audiences
Desirable for the role
- Experience developing cancer immunotherapy including cancer vaccines and cellular therapies
- In vivo expertise in murine tumor models
