POSITION PURPOSE:

The School Based Spanish Interpreter-Translator is responsible for assisting school personnel, Spanish speaking parents and students to communicate academic, family, social, and cultural needs through language support. The employee is also responsible for both oral interpretations and written translations for all school-based Spanish language support.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
:

  • Previous experience in Spanish interpreting (oral) and Spanish Translations (written) is preferred, but not required.
  • High School Diploma or equivalency required.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to prepare routine and technical documents.
  • Basic understanding of functions of public school preferred
  • Ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions in English and Spanish.
  • Ability to talk and hear: (Talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words. Hearing: perceiving nature of sounds by ear).
  • Ability to speak in Spanish and English to convey or exchange information. Includes giving instructions, assignments and/or directions.
  • Exceptional organizational skills
  • Ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions.
  • Ability to communicate via telephone.
  • Experience with public speaking
  • Ability to read a variety of correspondence, etc., in English and Spanish.
  • Ability to be adaptable to performing under stress and when confronted with persons acting under stress.
  • Basic understanding of NC student accountability standards preferred
  • Ability to be sensitive to cultural differences among individuals and groups of persons.
  • Ability to write, using standard conventions, in English and Spanish.


EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE

  • Any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • Requires the equivalent of a HS degree from the US or the home country.


UPREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience in providing interpretation and translation services is preferred.


UESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Other related duties as assigned by the principal.
  • Provide consecutive interpretation for parents and students during parent-teacher meetings, intervention meetings, child and family team meetings, IEP meetings, retention meetings, and any type of meeting that is requested either by the school or from the parents to the school.
  • Develop relationships with Spanish-speaking community to increase comfort to approach their children’s schools in getting all the help and services that are available to them.
  • Record Connect-Ed messages in Spanish as needed.
  • Translate all school based documents to Spanish.
  • Be available (either by work cell phone or office phone) to be contacted directly by the parents when they need to communicate a message to their children’s school.

Work is considered light physical work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force. Substantial amount of time spent standing and/or walking.


WORK ENVIRONMENT


Employees in this position are required to work in indoor and outdoor environments, and come into direct contact with ABSS staff, students and the public.
