Job Description
The Future of Free Speech Project is seeking a highly motivated and qualified research fellow to contribute to our efforts to advance understanding of free speech in the digital age. The project is dedicated to exploring the challenges and opportunities for free speech in the rapidly evolving landscape of online communication and digital media. As a research fellow, you will work closely with the project team to conduct cutting-edge research, contribute to the development of policy recommendations, and engage with stakeholders from academia, civil society, and industry.
On April 1, 2023, Justitia’s The Future of Free Speech Project opened a U.S.-based office at Vanderbilt University. The office at Vanderbilt will be led by Justitia CEO Jacob Mchangama and aims to foster a thriving global culture of free speech, particularly where free speech is under threat in authoritarian states and democracies, online and offline. The project has published cutting-edge research and provided influential commentary on the state of global freedom of expression that has been featured in over 900 media outlets in more than 60 countries. Through rigorous empirical research and cutting-edge advocacy, we focus on how freedom of expression can be strengthened to empower democracy, tolerance, and the rule of law, and how the harms of free expression can be mitigated through non-restrictive measures.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with the project team and other research fellows to advance the overall goals of the Future of Free Speech Project.
  • Engage with stakeholders from academia, civil society, and industry to share project findings and perspectives.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Support project events, such as workshops, conferences, and webinars, by contributing to the planning and execution.
  • Analyze data and literature, and develop insights and recommendations for policy and practice.
  • Contribute to the development of project reports, policy briefs, and academic publications.
  • Conduct original research on topics related to free speech in the digital age, such as content moderation, online harassment, platform governance, and the impact of emerging technologies on free speech.

Qualifications

  • A Ph.D. or equivalent degree in a relevant field, such as communication, law, political science, sociology, or computer science.
  • Familiarity with current debates and policy developments related to free speech, online communication, and digital media.
  • Strong quantitative and qualitative research skills, including experience with data analysis and/or ethnographic research methods.
  • Demonstrated expertise in free speech, digital media, and/or platform governance, as evidenced by publications, conference presentations, or other forms of scholarly activity.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, interdisciplinary environment.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills, including the ability to write for both academic and policy audiences.
