Job Description

This position is located in the Department of Human Services (DHS), Office of Program Review, Monitoring and Investigation (OPRMI), the Fraud Investigations Division (FID). The incumbent is responsible for providing a variety of administrative and clerical support to the FID. The FID is responsible for preventing fraud, waste and abuse in the administration of social service programs. FID ensures compliance and accountability with Federal and District statutes, regulations and procedures governing Department of Human Services’ (DHS) programs.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Program Support Assistant for the FID is responsible for receiving and screening telephone calls and visitors to the Unit and ascertains the nature of the call or business of visitors and determines the appropriate action. The incumbent handles many requests for information and resolves or assists in resolving a variety of conflicts that may arise.

Receives telephone calls and visitors to the office. Ascertains nature of call or business of visitors and determines appropriate action. Responds to a variety of inquiries not requiring technical knowledge and refers other inquiries to appropriate office staff or to other organizations, as required. Personally handles many requests for information and resolves or assists in resolving a variety of conflicts that may arise. Composes general correspondence pertaining to administrative matters ( e.g., letters, memoranda, reports, etc.). Reviews correspondence and documents that were prepared for signature of the supervisor or higher-level managers for correct format, grammar, punctuation, and any other special policy requirements. Coordinates corrective action with the appropriate official or office when errors are identified.

Qualifications and Education

Specialized experience is experience which is directly related to the position and has equipped the individual with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. To be creditable, one (1) year of specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression.

Collective Bargaining Unit: This position is covered under a collective bargaining unit represented by AFSCME 2401 and you may be required to pay an agency service fee through direct payroll deduction.

Position Designation: This position has been deemed Security Sensitive under the guideline of the DC Personnel Manual. Incumbents of this position are subject to enhanced suitability screening pursuant to Chapter 4 of DC personnel regulations. Accordingly, incumbents must successfully pass a criminal background and consumer credit check as a condition of employment and will be subject to periodic criminal background checks for the duration of their tenure.

Emergency Designation: This position has been designated as Emergency. Employees occupying positions designated as Emergency are required to:

  • Provide advice, recommendations, and/or specific functional support necessary for the continuity of operations during a declared emergency.
  • Telework during a declared emergency, instead of remaining or reporting to his or her duty station, if directed by the agency head (or designee), supervisor or manager.
  • Carry or wear their official District government ID card during the period of the declared emergency, if not teleworking.
  • Remain at their duty station, or alternate work location (approved by their supervisor), if activated, when a situation or condition occurs and results in early dismissal for nonessential/non-emergency employees.
  • Report to their duty station, when activated, on time and as scheduled when a situation or condition occurs during non-work hours, and results in the late arrival or closing of District government offices for non-essential/non-emergency employees.
