Job Description
What You Will Do
The Engineering, Operations, and Physics (J-6) Group is in need of an Operations Coordinator to support the The Dual-Axis Radiographic Hydrodynamic Test (DARHT) Facility. The DARHT Facility consists of two large x-ray machines that produce freeze-frame radiographs (high-powered x-ray images) of materials that implode at speeds greater than 10,000 miles an hour. Such radiographs help scientists ensure that weapons in the stockpile are safe and effective and that-if ever necessary-they will perform as designed.
J-6 is responsible for developing and maintaining operational readiness and efficiencies at DARHT. Included in operations is the maintenance and upkeep of Facility components, support of capability and facility upgrades, and creation of engineering solutions to unique accelerator specific issues. An Operations Coordinator is expected to supervise areas involving high consequences for safety; e.g., radioactive materials, accelerators, and high-energy devices.
Operations Specialist 3 ($81,700 - $133,100)
The successful candidate:
  • Assists in developing training for accelerator operator qualifications;
  • Serves as the point of contact for all programmatic equipment operations and maintenance;
  • Ensures safe operations of the accelerator systems in accordance with approved policies and procedures;
  • Adheres to the principles of Formality of Operations including Conduct of Operations, Conduct of Maintenance, Conduct of Engineering, and Conduct of Training.
  • Contributes to solutions to a variety of technical problems of moderate scope and complexity;
  • Performs routine facility or area walk-downs, procedure reviews, inspections, and/or evaluations to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the facility and/or organization;
  • Obtains and maintains DARHT Operations Supervisor qualifications;
  • Prepares and/or reviews lock-out/tag-out plans that ensure specific instructions for the isolation and/or de-energization of various mechanical or electrical sources according to established procedures;

What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Accelerator/Radiological:
Experience, specialized training, and/or knowledge of operations in a radiological or accelerator facility, including a demonstrated commitment to safety and security.
System Use and Maintenance:
Demonstrated experience contributing to solutions to a variety of technical problems of moderate scope and complexity.
Formality and Conduct:
Demonstrated experience adhering to the principles of Formality of Operations.
Team Dynamics:
Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse team of professionals, including the ability to leverage ingenuity, creativity, and personal independence to support multiple concurrent team tasks with changing programmatic priorities.
Education/Experience for Operations Specialist 3: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, post graduate course work may be desirable.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Advanced understanding of work hazards, safety practices, operating configuration, and lock-out/tag-out policies and procedures.
  • Experience as a qualified Linear Induction Accelerator Operator or Accelerator Operations Supervisor.
  • DOE Q clearance.
  • Military Officer experience.
  • Has demonstrated technical knowledge and record of operating integrated complex systems or facilities (e.g., accelerators, nuclear power plants, or other experimental facilities).

Essential Job Functions (can perform with or without reasonable accommodation): Ability to hear high-pitched sounds, ability to hear in a normal range (500 to 3000 htz), climbing stairs, climbing ladders, bending, lifting 30+ pounds, and carrying 20 to 30 pounds.
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Where You Will Work
The Integrated Weapons Experiments (J) Division conducts experiments to generate high-quality data necessary to maintain a safe and reliable nuclear stockpile and to support global security. The Division fields, diagnoses, and conducts subcritical experiments, hydrodynamic tests, and focused high-explosive experiments at local firing sites and at the Nevada National Security Site. J Division also operates the Dual Axis Radiographic Hydrodynamic Test (DARHT) Facility, the nation's premier hydrodynamic testing resource. The Division continually works with the Nevada National Security Site, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratory, the Department of Energy, and other partners to enhance the capabilities necessary to certify and ensure the safe, secure, and reliable performance of nuclear weapons' components, materials, and systems.

Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law.
