Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE) is seeking experienced and knowledgeable nutrition and wellness professionals for the Nutrition and Wellness Specialist position.
Under general direction, the Nutrition and Wellness Specialist provides technical assistance, training, and support to Local Education Agencies (LEAs) and schools in Los Angeles County to develop, expand, implement, and evaluate health and wellness policies and practices that advances whole child health using the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child (WSCC) model.
The current vacancy is a grant funded position and is anticipated to end June 30, 2025. Extension is contingent upon grant funding.
The Well Qualified Candidate Will Possess the Following
Knowledge:

  • Principles and techniques of organization and administration
  • Fundamental concepts of employment laws, codes, and regulations, including EEO, FLSA, FMLA, and Cal/OSHA and applicable provisions of collective bargaining agreements
  • Basic budgetary principles
  • Principles of nutrition, coordinated school health, local school wellness policies, and federal, state, and county laws and regulations
  • Techniques and resources utilized in assessing and evaluating school community health and wellness needs
  • Applicable state and federal laws and regulations and program procedures and guidelines related to coordinated school health, wellness, and nutrition

Required Education and Experience

Education: A bachelor’s degree in nutrition science, dietetics, health education, human development, or other fields closely related to the job requirements of this classification from an institution of higher learning recognized by the Council of Higher Education Accreditation. Foreign degrees and credit units require translation and equivalency established by an agency recognized by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing.
Experience: Two years of experience implementing nutrition, health, or wellness strategies, intervention, and programs in a pre-k through 12th grade school setting.
Additional Requirements: Certification as a Registered Dietitian with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) or Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) is preferred. A valid California Driver’s License and the availability of private transportation or access to reliable transportation between job sites is required. Some positions in this class may require oral and written skills in a second designated language.
Hybrid remote schedules may be available. To ensure the health and safety of its staff, LACOE may require employees to provide evidence of full vaccination against COVID-19.
Selection Process

Candidates who meet the minimum requirements above will be invited to participate in an examination that may consist of a Performance Exam, Technical Project, and Structured Interview.

Some positions that involve public contact may require bilingual proficiency for which selective certification may apply (Education Code 45277.5). In addition, the eligibility list resulting from this examination may be used to fill vacancies in related job classifications for which no eligibility list exists (Education Code 45272).
