Job Description
The Medical Assistant (MA), under direction from a Registered Nurse, Nurse Practitioner, or physician, performs routine clinical and clerical functions to assist providers in the delivery of patient centered medical services for assigned departments within the CMU Health faculty group practices. Patient care activities are identified and staffed based on clinical operations needs and as directed by the Clinical Practice Coordinator. Clinic Environment, requiring delivery of patient care (physical dexterity), application of bio-hazard material handling, minimal lifting (not greater than 10 pounds), extensive computer usage (eye strain).


  • Assists providers and co-workers as part of the health care team.
  • Education High School Diploma or GED and Graduation from a Medical Assistant Program which reflects the training outlined for basic competence by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) preferred or appropriate experience.
  • Licensure Certified.
  • Performs quality controls according to established procedures.
  • Aptitude Understanding and appreciation of the medical education/academic process with an intrinsic desire to enhance said process through direct educational involvement and support.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills that encourage harmonious working relationships with individuals in the health and educational settings.
  • Assist with quality improvement projects as requested.
  • Registered as a Medical Assistant preferred.
  • Associates degree as a Medical Assistant preferred.
  • Assists with clinic flow to ensure efficiency. Seeks out other tasks to assist with patient flow.
  • Verifies and documents purpose of visit, vital signs, allergies, administration of medications/tests, medication history, and patient instructions according to current CMU Health standards (i.e. instruct to undress from waste up and gown when indicated, remove shoes for diabetic foot exam).
  • Electronic Medical Record experience preferred.
  • Orders, stocks and prepares clinical supplies and equipment as assigned.
  • Prepares, cleans and maintains exam and treatment rooms according to proper infection control standards,
  • Performs point-of-care laboratory and diagnostic procedures according to protocol.
  • Maintains confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA standards.
  • Experience At least one year Ambulatory/Office experience.
  • Administers non-dose dependent medications and injections according to current standards and after successful completion of documented competencies.
  • Performs instrument processing to include cleaning and sterilization of instruments according to protocol, as assigned.
  • Prepares patients for examination by escorting them from the reception area to the exam/treatment room.
  • Reviews after Visit Summary instructions with patients prior to check-out.

The Referral Specialist/Floater has the responsibility for sending and receiving Managed Care referrals; transcribing medical data, maintaining patient records, ensuring quality control and legal compliance; and assisting with telephone encounters.


  • Knowledge and familiarity with managed care and referral authorization processes preferred.
  • Proficient written and verbal communication skills with multicultural sensitivity.
  • Demonstrate keen attention to detail.
  • Strong transcription skills, as well as knowledge of medical terminology, understand the importance and legal impact their work may have on the outcome of various processes.
  • Coordinate all managed care referral authorization requests and schedule appointments with referral physicians.
  • Clerical and office support work coupled with keyboarding and computer proficiency.
  • Assist in enhancing CMU Medical Education Partners internal referral network, monitor referrals, returns, and members span of care.
  • Provide backup for the Medical Records Clerk as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Document referrals in Epic according to current procedure, copy forms and records, and mail or fax documents.
  • Excellent interpersonal, customer service, and organizational skills required.
