Position Highlights
The Arizona Student Unions is looking for a HVAC/Refrigeration Technician to join our team. The HVAC/Refrigeration Mechanic installs, repairs, overhauls and maintains heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) or refrigeration systems. This is a journey level position. Working conditions include: restricted movement, extreme temperatures, intense noise, hazardous materials, and occasionally transporting/moving heavy objects. Incumbents perform either HVAC or refrigeration duties.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Repairs, overhauls and maintains HVAC/Refrigeration equipment in the Student Union Memorial Center, Global, and all Satellite Operations.
  • Troubleshoots, repairs, and overhauls equipment such as air compressors, pumps, air handlers, air dryers, heat exchangers, other environmental changing devices, other mechanical equipment or electrical, pneumatic and electronic components.
  • Reads gauges and instruments and adjusts mechanisms such as valves, controls and pumps to control the level of fluid pressure and distribution in systems.
  • Tests malfunctioning systems and components using electrical, mechanical, digital and pneumatic controls.
  • Maintains cooling towers, water treatment facilities and tower distribution systems. Performs planned maintenance, regular servicing and repairs to refrigeration equipment of all types, sizes and temperature ranges.
  • Fabricates locking systems for security on refrigeration boxes
  • Alternates ON-CALL shifts to provide 24 hour service. Building check for all refrigeration equipment on alternate weekends and holidays (check doors for security).
  • Work on Vending refrigerated trucks.
  • Schedule/adjust computer for air handler control.
  • Additional duties as assigned by supervisor.

Installs HVAC/Refrigeration equipment for all departments:

  • Installs, maintains, and repairs pneumatic valves, electric valves, heat transfer equipment, ventilation and air distribution equipment.
  • Installs and replaces all types of pumps, refrigeration equipment and compressors according to prints, specifications, diagrams, or other instructions

Shop Operation:

  • Prepares estimates, drawings, and specs for repairs and installation of new equipment. Maintains records of repairs or equipment requiring future service.
  • Coordinates work schedules with other departments and shops in order to keep inconvenience to a minimum
  • Assists Maintenance Personnel as needed

Building Assistance:
  • Tent, mall and housekeeping set ups, special even set ups.
  • Assist in building emergencies such as fire alarms or water and electrical outages.
  • Opens the building if needed

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the HVAC/Refrigeration tools, materials and test equipment.
  • Knowledge of repair, maintenance and installation techniques.
  • Skill in reading and understanding schematics
  • Skill in analyzing HVAC/Refrigeration malfunction from performance and test equipment reading and determining appropriate repairs.
  • Ability to communicate effectively


Minimum Qualifications
  • Chlorofluorocarbons Certification required.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience.
  • Journey level position. Completion of a high school education or an equivalent combination of apprenticeship program, technical training and/or experience.
