The Messenger is a new digital news media company, whose mission is to deliver accurate, balanced, non-partisan news and information across every vertical, from politics and business to sports and entertainment.
Job Summary:
The Messenger is seeking a Heath Editor with experience in spotting, assigning and editing health topics to join our newsroom. The ideal candidates will be responsible for flagging stories, editing and occasionally writing news stories, assigning and guiding reporters, and ensuring that all content is accurate, engaging and aligned with the organization's editorial mission.
Responsibilities:
- Ensure that all content is optimized for SEO and social media.
- Collaborate with reporters, producers and other members of the editorial team to ensure that all stories are effectively curated, edited and promoted.
- Coordinate with the Health and Wellness vertical lead on story pitches, editorial calendars, breaking news and team schedules.
- Develop and implement editorial guidelines and standards.
- Manage a team of reporters to ensure that all content is high-quality, accurate, engaging, and rapid.
- Collaborate with other departments, such as design and development, to ensure that all content is visually appealing, user-friendly, and optimized for different platforms.
- Flag vital breaking health news and trending stories, and work with reporters to develop timely and informative health news coverage.
- Develop and assign health features stories about a wide variety of health conditions.
- Edit news stories that are accurate, engaging and informative.
- Develop and maintain relationships with key sources and contributors.
- Monitor news wires, social media and other sources to identify stories and trends that are relevant to our audience.
Requirements:
- Experience in a breaking news environment.
- Experience interpreting health studies and translating complicated health topics into digestible, shareable information.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet tight deadlines.
- Familiarity with SEO and social media best practices.
- Familiarity with different CMS and editorial tools.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of experience as a health editor or a related role within a newsroom.
- Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams.
- Strong news judgment and the ability to identify stories and trends that are relevant to our audience.
- Experience assigning and editing evergreen and SEO-driven health conditions content.
- Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, Public Health or a related field.
- Strong leadership and team management skills.
- Knowledge of AP style and other editorial guidelines.
- Excellent writing and editing skills.
**Salary range: $140,000-$170,000**
