About UsThe Fessenden School is an all boys independent day and boarding school serving 525 students in Pre-Kindergarten through 9th Grade in West Newton, MA. For more than 100 years, The Fessenden School has offered state-of-the-art facilities, curriculum, and programs specifically designed to meet the educational needs of boys.Position SummaryThe Fessenden School is looking for a creative, motivated, organized, and collaborative Health and Wellness teacher to connect with boys in grades 7-9. The teacher is responsible for instructing seven classes of 14 to 16 boys that meet twice a week and is a member of the Upper School team.
Being a collaborative member of the Upper School team is essential to the Fessenden model of having an integrated and cross disciplinary approach to learning. Candidates should also have knowledge of childhood development and strategies that will help students to become better decision makers. In this role this teacher will be a key part of Fessendens overall Character Education initiative. The classes that will be taught by the Health and Wellness teacher will serve as an anchor for the character education curriculum.
This teacher will teach the Character Education lessons in a way that will lead to students utilizing the skills they have learned throughout their day. The ability to prepare engaging lessons that effectively address the needs of our diverse community is an important aspect to all teaching roles at Fessenden.Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following: Teach and stay current with curriculum and 21st-century learningIntegrate racial literacy curriculum and actively teach and model inclusion, equity, and social justiceIncorporate project based learning, educational technology, differentiated learning and cultural competency in lessonsCollaborate and facilitate character education and service-learning programs with Upper School Head Exemplify the Schools mission and community principles, including honesty, respect, and compassion Participate in and help facilitate all division and grade-level activitiesCoach a sport and/ or supervise guided study hallCollaborate with colleagues within grade level, division, department and student support services, including the Learning Resources DepartmentPerform duties such as supervising drop off and dismissal, recess, lunch; being a homeroom teacher and/or advisor, grade team member, student club facilitator: leading/assisting with fall orientation, grade trips, overnight grade trips, and events.Maintain all documentation connected with the curriculum and studentsAttend team meetingsAttend faculty meetings; typically on Mondays from 4:30 pm to 5:45 pmAttend professional development meetings; three 8:30am to 4:00pm and three 3:00pm to 5:00pmMaintain regular and reliable attendanceMaintain current CPR/AED & first aid certification and child abuse prevention trainingOther duties as assignedScheduleOrientation August 21 & 22School year August 28 to June 11 Mon - Fri 7:30am to 4:30pmMinimum QualificationsBachelors degree in education or related subjectAbility to develop and provide instruction that meet the learning needs of a range of studentsEnthusiasm and communication skills to engage boys and build meaningful relationshipsStrong supervisory and leadership skills to manage and facilitate a classroomAbility to perform critical thinking, organization, prioritization and problem solving with minimal supervisionAbility to serve in a diverse community of colleagues, students, and parentsDemonstrated commitment to inclusion, justice, diversity, and equityA commitment to boys and boys educationPreferred Qualifications Masters degree in education or related subjectTeaching certification Physical Demands and Work EnvironmentThe physical demands described here are representative of those that are essential functions of this position.
