Job Description
PURPOSE OF POSITION:


The Finishing Department Supervisor (2nd Shift) is primarily responsible for overseeing all activities associated with running the company’s finishing department machines (2-meter, 3-meter, and double joiner specialty folder gluer machines). This includes overseeing operators’ setup, operation, cleanup, and recommending improvements to machine operators.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Ensures accurate and efficient set-up of the machines in accordance with proper setup techniques.
  • Oversees that Machine Operators adhere to the production schedule. Make recommendations for optimizing the schedule to meet cost, quality, and service goals. Reports any unusual scheduling issues to Supervisor.
  • Oversees that the quality of boxes is checked during runs, including mis-slotted boxes, loose liners, misprints, and any other defects.
  • Ensures team is following established department policies, procedures, work instructions, and safety and environmental guidelines.
  • Ensure that the finishing department team is operating safely and within OSHA compliance at all times.
  • Completes necessary reports in an accurate and timely manner, including but not limited to Production Data, Machine Operational Status, Safety Data, and Quality Data.
  • Ensures team is following all PPE policies, including gloves, safety glasses, and hearing protection as required.
  • Trains new and existing employees on machine operations.
  • Oversees that Machine Operators operate machines to run efficiently, produce quality products, and maximize machine utilization.
  • Performs other duties and/or responsibilities as assigned.
  • Turns in maintenance work orders to the maintenance department/supervision for needed repairs. Be proactive in the maintenance of all folder gluers and associated equipment.
  • Oversees that work areas are kept neat and clean.


EDUCATION:


  • Higher education degree is a plus.
  • High School Diploma/GED required.


EXPERIENCE:


  • Must be able to complete complex setups (including displays, 4-corner trays, z folds, and auto-lock bottom boxes) within the standard given time.
  • Minimum of 6 years of experience in machine operations with folder gluer machines in the corrugated industry.
  • Minimum of 2 years in a Team Leader/Supervisory role.
  • Knowledge of Specialty Folder Gluers (including knowledge of corrugated displays, 4-corner trays, z folds, and auto-lock bottom boxes).
  • Must be able to teach others how to operate, set up, and troubleshoot the equipment.
  • Must be proficient at understanding and setting up cold and hot glue systems.


CORE QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS:


  • Valco experience is a plus.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving one or more concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Must have the ability to perform basic mathematics including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to use rulers, calipers, micrometers, and other inspection equipment.
  • Thorough understanding of product layouts, product specifications, and production specifications.
  • Ability to use specific computer software to enter and utilize information in our computer systems.
  • Ability to effectively manage time and meet set targets and deadlines.
  • Strong leadership skills to take on tasks and see them through with minimal management.
  • Ability to read and comprehend basic instructions.
  • Must have the ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals and train others on such documents.
  • Must have demonstrated mechanical aptitude through prior work experience.
  • Good communication and team coordination skills.
  • Thorough understanding of equipment functions and capabilities that can be translated to efficient operation.
  • Assist other areas as needed to maintain a team approach.
  • Must be willing to work overtime as needed; significant overtime may be required during busy periods.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF THE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:


Standing, walking, talking, hearing, and vision are required over 95% of the time. Bending, twisting, and reaching are required less than 95% of the time. Feeling is required 75% of the time while pushing and pulling are required about 20% of the time. Low levels of lifting (10 pounds or less) are required about 10% of the time, while medium levels of lifting and carrying (20 to 50 pounds) are required less than 5% of the time.
