Job Description

The Electrical Engineer is responsible for the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of all units in the generating station. This position works/ interacts with Maintenance, Operations, Tech Services, Vendors, and a unionized workforce in identifying plant issues, which includes troubleshooting and solving issues related to plant controls and electrical systems. This position also provides constant technical support for maintenance and operations to afford maximum availability, efficiency, and safety to the plant.
The Electrical Engineer will service (2) power plants in Shelocta and New Florence, Pennsylvania. The Conemaugh Generating Station is an 1,872 MW baseload coal-powered plant. The Keystone Generating Station is a 1.71-gigawatt (1,711 MW), coal power plant.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Assist in the development of Technical Instructions, Operating Procedures, and System Descriptions.
  • Implement control and electrical projects, including design, start-up and test, and documentation.
  • Investigate and purchase new equipment that provides increased productivity and/or lower costs for the station.
  • Work with environmental personnel to ensure that environmental monitoring equipment and programs are working properly so the station can comply with environmental regulations.
  • Responsible for maintaining housekeeping and cleanliness of office area and support plant housekeeping and cleanliness programs.
  • Working knowledge of LOTO, Confined Space and Plant Emergency Response Procedures.
  • Provide technical support as an Area Leader for station control, electrical and instrumentation systems.
  • Maintain station electrical control elementary drawings.
  • Advise and/or direct outside contractors to ensure their work meets station requirements.
  • Interface with substation owner/operator with relationship to equipment and operational issues.
  • Responsible for assuring that all safety rules and regulations are followed as well as assuring the safe operation of the equipment and units.
  • Provide custom solutions for operations and maintenance departments for the station controls which include implementing changes and additions to station control and electrical systems.
  • Encourages and promotes a team approach to identify and resolve operational issues.
  • This includes troubleshooting, and routine modifications along with any new major or minor additions or changes. This also includes mentoring and training of maintenance technicians and operations personnel in all aspects of the station control and electrical systems.
  • Support the Project personnel in the review of all aspects of the design for new systems to ensure that they meet or exceed station operation and maintenance requirements.
  • Provide assistance, training, and support to technicians in troubleshooting system problems.
  • Ensure that spare parts for plant electrical and control systems are available.

Qualifications and Skills:


  • Professional Engineering License is preferred.
  • Strong understanding of and maintain compliance with Power Generation NERC Standards such as MOD-25 and NERC-693.
  • Knowledge of the station distributed control systems including boiler controls and scrubber controls; this includes digital logic and analog controls.
  • Support the Project personnel, including outside consultants, in the review of all aspects of the design for new systems to ensure that they meet or exceed station operation and maintenance requirements.
  • Must have or be willing to obtain required training/certifications to assume the position of station Radiation Safety Officer, with responsibilities that cover nuclear density gauges and coal analyzers.
  • Possess a strong understanding of the purpose and function of Protective Relays, types and how they function – such as PT’s (voltage transformers) and CT’s (current transformers).
  • Provide custom solutions for operations and maintenance departments for station electrical and control systems, implementing changes and additions as required.
  • Must understand NERC CIP/NRC regulatory standards and processes and a basic understanding of security principles and knowledge of cyber security principals and technologies.
  • Familiar with the safe use of data recorders to troubleshoot potential electrical issues.
  • Experience and working knowledge in the installation and application of field instrumentation including flow, pressure, and level transmitters, limit switches, solenoids, actuators, and related equipment.
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering or similar field
  • The successful candidate must be familiar with power transformers, high voltage switchgear, power relays, circuit breakers, starters, motor control centers, battery systems and their associated equipment and controls related to the electrical power distribution system within the generating station.
  • A basic understanding of the plants financial structure and the Station Strategic Business Plan is a plus.
  • Minimum of three years of Power Plant operating experience or five years in a related field
  • Knowledgeable of Power Generation High Voltage Transformers (various manufacturers such as Mitsubishi, Siemens, and others).
  • Familiar with station operating characteristics and procedures to troubleshoot and diagnose control systems issues. Have knowledge/experience with programmable logic controllers, computers, and the ability to read control programming/logic.

Other Desirable Skills / Working Conditions:


This a mixed work environment that combines both office and plant working conditions at two power plants within 30 miles of each other and a wide range of noise levels. Candidate must be able to:


  • Work outside normal business hours as necessary to support forced and scheduled unit outages and in support of equipment diagnostics/troubleshooting.
  • Lift as appropriate to perform duties and responsibilities.
  • Wear required personal protection equipment (PPE) such as hard hats, safety glasses, goggles, face shields, hearing protection, respirators, fall protection harnesses, and other PPE as required.
  • Work around rotating and energized equipment, hazardous materials, and chemicals.
