POSITION DESCRIPTION\ Early Education Director\ \ INFORMATION\ Status: Active\ Department: Cultural Heritage and Education\ Type of Position: Exempt\ Location of Work:Juneau, AK or Remote Option\ Covered Position: Yes\ Salary Grade(s): 15\ Hours of Work: M-F 8:00am 4:30pm\ Employment Category: Regular Full-Time\ \ PURPOSE\ The Early Education Director will provide leadership, direction, and management of Tlingit and Haidas Cultural Heritage and Education (CHE) Early Education programs, including the Haa Yoo Xatngi Kdi Language Immersion Program, Little Eagles and Ravens Nest Childcare Center, and Head Start Programs. The Early Education Director, with guidance from CHE Senior Director, will be responsible for developing, enhancing, and aligning cultural heritage and education programs and services.\ \ The Early Education Director may also serve as a contact and subject matter expert during Tribal Education Compact Negotiations with the State Department of Education and Early Development. In partnership with the Senior Director and Tribal Education Compact Liaison, the Early Education Director will advocate for Tlingit and Haida education initiatives and funding while developing program infrastructure.\ \ REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS\ Reports To: CHE Senior Director\ Supervises: Early Education Employees\ Liaison To: N/A\ \ ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS


  • Establish and maintain strong working relationships with tribes, tribal organizations, educational entities, and community stakeholders.
  • Research pedagogy and effective cultural and language restoration models
  • Provide oversight and direct day-to-day operations of early educational programs and services
  • Provide program briefings to tribal leadership, Executive Council, and Communications staff
  • Advocate for tribal education initiatives, including language immersion, culturally responsive curriculum, and preparing the teaching workforce
  • Build a sustainable early education infrastructure that may be replicated in other Southeast communities
  • Draft policy and procedure
  • Design, develop, and implement, with guidance from the CHE Senior Director and Executive Leadership, CHEs Early Education programs
  • Serve as secondary contact and subject matter expert during Tribal Education Compact Negotiations
  • Develop and maintain department budget, prepare grant applications, and execute grant administration
  • Analyze performance outcomes and program impact

  • Extensive knowledge in computerized record keeping and reporting
  • Proficient in the most recent version of MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint
  • Enthusiasm for broad-based cultural and educational programs
  • Strong personnel management skills and knowledge of legal requirements
  • Ability to effectively organize, assign, and supervise the work of department staff

  • Ability to prepare and administer budgets, to provide financial guidance and assistance, and administer contracts in accordance with established policies, rules, and regulations
  • Desire to advocate for education initiatives on behalf of the tribe
  • Skilled at conducting public meetings and comfortable with public speaking
  • Familiarity with Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian cultures and communities
  • Knowledge and understanding of Tlingit and Haida functions, policies, goals, priorities, and operating programs
  • Thorough knowledge of tribal education programs and services and inter-relationships between public schools, programs, and partner agencies
  • Strong project management skills


\ MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (education, experience, skills)


  • 3 or more years of supervisory experience
  • 10 years of experience in education, teaching, or leadership
  • Masters degree in related field


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS (education, Experience, Skills)


  • Doctoral degree in related field

\ UNUSUAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OR RESTRICTIONS\ The majority of work is performed in a professional office setting and is generally sedentary, but may require extended periods of walking, standing, bending, and carrying of items weighing less than 40 lbs. Travel on small aircraft or ferry may be required.


  • Tlingit and Haida requires a criminal background check be conducted on all employees. All employment offers are conditional until federal criminal background check results verify your eligibility to work for Tlingit and Haida
