The Division of Academic and Student Affairs (DASA) is where students discover connections and community. It is where students live, where they gather, where they improve themselves, each other, and their university. DASA is where students seek guidance and support, both in and outside of the classroom. The division serves all students at NC State through three integrated components: academic affairs, student affairs, and University College.

Student Leadership and Engagement is responsible for: comprehensive leadership education, training, and development; campus-wide civic learning and democratic engagement efforts, including voter engagement and early voting; community outreach and service; direct advising of Student Government, the University Activities Board, Black Students Board, Alternative Service Break; oversight and organization development for more than 700 registered student organizations; operation of the campus-wide online service platform; vision for and management of the Woodward Student Involvement Center. In addition, this unit houses academic courses – USC 291, USC 292, and UCS 298.
With a focus on collaboration, the unit strives to equip students with the tools, knowledge, skills, and meaningful experiences to succeed academically, professionally, personally, and as engaged citizens in campus, local, national, and global communities.

Essential Job Duties
The Director of Student Leadership and Engagement is an energetic, innovative, student-centered leader who provides a shared vision for student engagement on campus and within the community. With a focus on the University’s strategic goals of student success and developing socially responsible leaders for the state, the nation, and the world, the director will be responsible for developing partnerships between Academic and Student Affairs units, as well as community-based organizations. These partnerships provide the foundation for challenging learning experiences that support students’ intellectual, social and spiritual development. The Director is a member of the Division of Academic and Student Affairs’ leadership team.
Responsibilities:
  • Create a healthy and collaborative team environment focused on promoting student engagement and success.
  • Coordinate instructors for several leadership courses including, but not limited to, USC 291/292: Service-Learning Program Leader Development I and II and USC 298: Introduction to Civic Engagement and Social Change
  • Provide leadership for Student Leadership and Engagement staff consisting of Associate Directors, Assistant Directors, Program Coordinators, Administrative Support, Graduate Assistants, Student Staff, and Student Leaders.
  • Promote student success through student leadership programs and resources that promote social and educational programming at NC State.
  • Develop mutually beneficial partnerships with local and international communities and organizations.
  • Inspire a shared vision of and provide leadership for co-curricular student engagement on campus
  • Create an environment that prioritizes programming goals that reflect a commitment to sustainability.
  • Develop a vision for student leadership programming and develop networks on the campus, and within the community, that engage students in challenging, meaningful, and high-impact learning experiences
  • Develop long-term strategies and goals for student leadership that prioritizes connections between in-and-out of class learning and ensures effective assessment of student learning and organizational outcomes.
  • Inspire a shared vision for the Alternative Service Break program.
  • Provide leadership and vision for an organization network of more than 700 active student organizations, including organization registration, officer training and student organizational advising.
  • Facilitate collaboration toward shared goals between co-curricular, academic, and auxiliary units across campus
  • In partnership with unit personnel and other key university stakeholders, develop protocols to ensure appropriate risk assessment and liability reduction.
  • Provide leadership for campus-community outreach and collaboration, the Wake County Board of Elections, North Carolina Campus Compact, and local non-profit agencies


Student Development:
  • Work in collaboration to oversee the development and enhancement of programs for student organizational leaders that teach leadership skills, ethical decision-making, and prepare students to be socially responsible global citizens.
  • Ensure the effective advisement of the University Activities Board and Black Students Board.
  • Champion students in challenging leadership roles that provide meaningful opportunities to practice their leadership skills and impact change on campus and in the community.
  • Ensure the effective advisement of the Student Government including the Executive and Legislative Branches and the Student Body Treasury.
  • Create innovative activities that stimulate, motivate, educate, and involve the student body while promoting student learning and student success.

Budget:
  • Ensure student organizations are in compliance with all relevant state and university policies, rules, and regulations.
  • Oversee multiple student fee budgets and other receipts.
  • Serve on appropriate unit and university committees

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Master’s Degree in Higher Education, Counseling or related degree and 5+ years professional experience working with students in a higher education setting or related experience, with a focus on leadership development and civic engagement.
  • 3+ years in a supervisory/ management position.

Other Required Qualifications
  • Superior written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop a shared leadership vision with staff, student leaders, and campus and community partners.
  • Knowledge of national trends and best practices in higher education, student leadership and civic engagement.
  • Skill in problem solving, and data-driven decision making, and prioritization
  • Experience working in a student-centered environment including demonstrated understanding and application of student development theory.
  • Business process and budget management experience.
  • Outstanding judgment and ability to help students and staff develop protocols for effective risk and liability management.
  • Demonstrated skill working with communities.
  • Prior staff supervision experience and demonstration of superior management and sound decision making ability.

Preferred Qualifications
  • 5-7 years management experience in student leadership, civic engagement, advising, and programming.
