Summary/Objective: The Director of Performing Arts leads the interpreters who specialize in acting, music, and museum theater to direct the creation, review, and production of performances across the Historic Area in support of CWF’s educational mission and interpretive plan. The Director sets the interpretive strategy and relevant training, performance management, financial management, and program production for musicians, actor interpreters, Nation Builders, and Evening Programs staff. The Director is a member of the Historic Area Leadership Team and collaborates with colleagues in Program Design, Historical Research, and other departments to produce performances that are critical to the Foundation’s mission and vision.
Essential Functions:
- Links interpretive goals to well-crafted, well-enacted acting and musical performances that are collaboratively researched, reviewed, and produced.
- Aligns department team members’ talents with programmatic needs. Reviews and hires the best candidates and creates a work culture that promotes job mastery, communication, teamwork, and guest focus. Ensures onboarding and training that facilitates success for all staff in Performing Arts.
- Provides coaching of direct reports and facilitates feedback and counseling when needed in coordination with appropriate CWF colleagues. Fosters a spirit of collaboration and professionalism with direct reports.
- Creates a production schedule for performances that meet guest demands, align with the Foundation Interpretive Plan and program design briefs. Ensures the inclusion of multiple perspectives and personas in performances and productions. Demonstrates ability to plan and visualize the full sweep of performances through programming seasons.
- Assists supervisors in coaching and development of supervisors and individual contributors on the Performing Arts staff.
- Keeps records for all supervisors, sound techs and interpreters assigned to the department. Develops and maintains an appropriate archive retention schedule.
- Provides sound fiscal management for the department and demonstrates knowledge of budgetary opportunities and constraints.
- Collaborates with the Program Design and Historic Research teams in the ideation, creation, development, production, and assessment of performances. Ensures appropriate processes and approvals are obtained for prop requests, use of Historic Area venues, and maintenance needs.
- Works with other managers, supervisors, and directors across the Historic Area to implement the current programming and coordinate implementation of new programming
- Sets expectations for all staff as a “steward” for the Foundation, managing historic property, including buildings, reproduction props and collections.
- Serves as a Daily Program Manager (DPM) for programs when necessary; manages, coordinates, and oversees the work of the managers and supervisors as DPMs.
- Other related duties as assigned.
Supervision to be Exercised:
Direct: Supervision of a Manger of Historic Area Performances; an Artistic Director; and Manager of Evening Programs for three (3) total direct reports.
Indirect: 4 Supervisors and 30 staff.
Position Type (Regular/FT; Casual/PT)/Expected Hours of Work Per Week: Regular/Full-time. 40 hours.
Required and Preferred Education and Experience:
Required: Bachelor's degree in a relevant field and ten years of progressive experience in performing arts work as an actor, musician, writer or director in the public history field. Advanced proficiency in word processing, spreadsheet, email, and presentation software systems like Microsoft Office.
Preferred: Advanced degree in a relevant field and ten years progressive experience in performing arts work related to museums, historic sites, and/or culturally diverse storytelling with historic themes and research and knowledge of trends in the public history field. Advanced proficiency in online scheduling and ticketing systems, SharePoint, and MS Power Automate.
Qualifications:
Subject Matter:
- Extensive working knowledge of American colonial history with focus on 18th century Virginia
Leadership:
- Proven leadership skills to establish and communicate goals that support CWF’s mission
Team Management:
- Ability to mentor and lead a cohesive interpretive team
Communication Skills:
- Excellent verbal, written, and public speaking skills. Recognizes and uses appropriate communication channels in the appropriate contexts.
Project Management:
- Demonstrated project management skills.
Museum Operations:
- Knowledge of museum operations with a focus on interpretive planning and program management.
Collaboration:
- Solicit feedback, facilitate teamwork, and participate as a team leader and team member with staff across the division and Foundation.
