lPOSITION SUMMARY:
The Director, Controls Engineering is a leadership position within the Fortna Engineering organization responsible for leadership and accountability of direction, coaching and mentoring for Software Controls Engineering, and commissioning teams in EMEA Region. This role includes strategy definition and direction of development and implementation processes to support Engineering design standards, technical requirements, and resource requirements. The Director drives key initiatives and cross department collaboration to increase efficiency and quality of project delivery for Electrical, Controls, System Testing and Quality Assurance.
Preferred location for this role is Milton Keynes. Other locations could be considered. (Graz Austria, Houten/ Netherlands, Hamburg/ Germany, Parma/ Italy).
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
  • Collaborating with the R&D Controls Development Group to assist with developing new tools and enhance functionality of existing tools to improve stability and usability
  • Providing sales support alongside controls engineering team management and professional/technical resources during Client visits to provide insight to work, scope, and plan and assisting in account penetration for global markets
  • Accountability for department P & L performance, project delivery budget and schedule management
  • Collaborating with multiple engineering disciplines to provide feedback on system design and design standards/requirements
  • Providing vision, direction, and guidance to ensure controls engineering deliverables and system performance align with expectations
  • Continuing to build out the Controls Engineering team with strong talent through supporting timely and effective recruitment, on-boarding, promotion, retention, and termination activities, working with appropriate support services as required
  • Ensuring accurate and efficient forecasting, tracking and allocating of available resources to accommodate project specific goals; build, deploy, commission, training etc.
  • Implement best practices and standards supporting optimal quality, safety, and productivity for entire group.
  • Supporting engineering efforts by providing input and review of Controls Engineering specific hours and scope
  • Supporting WES estimation efforts by providing input and review of Software Controls Engineering specific hours and hardware
  • Modeling and training others on problem solving approaches and design requirement definition
  • Sharing subject matter expertise to provide valuable input to R&D and WES roadmap initiatives identified from Client engagements and feedback
  • Providing subject matter expertise and direction for managers and employees in Controls Engineering during project set–up to ensure consistent implementation performance
  • Providing direction as necessary to ensure trailblazing efforts are sufficiently supported for global expansion
  • Championing development and professional growth of Controls Engineering managers and employees through coaching, training, and mentoring initiatives to increase employee technical and managerial skills
  • Leading definition of “standard offerings” related to controls solutions (Software and MHE)
  • Identify/set curriculum, create documentation and training solutions for continued professional growth within the Controls Engineering group
  • Facilitating education, training, and direction regarding integration of new tools developed by the development group
  • Completing regular performance review and feedback sessions, required documentation, and follow up on milestones/action plans for group members
  • Providing regular updates on project and sales support status
  • Day-to-day management of staff including hiring, training, coaching, overseeing professional development, etc.
  • Providing feedback to design teams from solution inception supporting implementation success
  • Setting department and individual goals and metrics for Controls Engineering management and team to support overall business goals of Fortna
  • Managing culture, robustness, and efficiency of Controls Engineering identifying opportunities to continuously improve team performance
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Strong desire to lead, handle responsibility and initiate change
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally
  • Five-plus years of related experience in industrial controls
  • Ability to understand functionality across industrial MHE design (Communication networks, PLC systems, electrical control panels)
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, time management and problem-solving skills
  • Strong oral and written communication skills with internal and external resources
  • Ability to perform essential functions of the job
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule
  • Eight-plus years of experience working with WCS and or WES systems and considered a Subject Matter Expert
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • BS degree in software, engineering, or related field
  • Experience in machine control systems
  • Experience in material handling systems
WORKING CONDITONS When duties are performed in a typical office environment, extended periods of sitting at a desk and viewing a computer screen will be required. Also required is the ability to talk and hear, in person and by telephone; use of hands to handle, feel, or operate standard office equipment; and ability to reach with hands and arms. Associates are frequently required to walk and stand. The noise level in this work environment is usually quiet. When travelling to Client sites, essential requirements of this position may require physical presence in various environments and locations. Physical stamina may be required for prolonged standing, bending, stooping, and/or working in cramped quarters. Exposure to potentially dangerous tools and equipment amidst a variety of building materials is probable, as is occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the work environment can vary from being relatively quiet, to moderate, to excessive. Safety shoes or boots may be required in certain situations. Additional safety clothing including gloves, hardhats, and devices to protect eyes, mouth, or hearing, will be worn as necessary.
