Position Summary:
We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Business Development Manager.
Manages activities related to the disclosure and protection of new inventions and the transfer of innovations from NYU (including the School of Medicine, Main Campus, and Tandon School of Engineering) to the marketplace, with a focus on the areas of physical sciences, software implemented technologies, software/hardware systems, medical devices, and digital health. This includes assessing the commercial potential of new invention disclosures from faculty, identifying potential commercial partners, providing evaluations to management on the potential for startup formation, marketing to companies, and participating on the deal team to negotiate research and license agreements and post-deal diligence. Develops and leads new initiatives for commercialization of NYU technologies.
Job Responsibilities:
- Meet with researchers to learn of their research, make them aware of intellectual property considerations, and encourage invention disclosures.
- Evaluate invention disclosures from faculty for commercial potential. Work with Director, Intellectual Property, outside counsel, and inventor to evaluate patentability of inventions.
- Assist Director, Intellectual Property and outside counsel in preparation and prosecution of patent applications, to ensure commercially important aspects of invention are protected. Become facile in the use of copyright and/or trademark protection in order to protect and commercialize software innovations that are not patentable. Maintain knowledge of changing USPTO guidelines in the protection of computer software.
- Prepare non-confidential marketing summaries of inventions, including inventors background and achievements, description of technology, and commercial applications in order to freely circulate to industry, including the use of social media platforms like LinkedIn.
- Identify potential commercial partners for licensing NYU inventions and/or funding NYU research, including companies and investor groups, and identify and contact key decision makers within such entities to market NYU inventions and research in collaboration with the Director, Biomedical Devices and Alliances. Negotiate confidentiality agreements with companies to facilitate in-depth discussions. Work closely with faculty on presentations to companies on inventions and research projects, and establishing licensing strategy (large company vs. start-up, exclusive vs. non-exclusive licensing, etc.).
- Research and evaluate the active research and development interests of companies, including reaching out to schedule meetings with companies and attending conferences for networking with company personnel responsible for technology licensing and business development. Work as part of a team to research relevant information (including primary source interviews) relating to the potential of the invention to be part of a startup company, and whether NYULH should consider any investments.
- Negotiate license and research agreements with companies, in consultation with inventor/PI and Director, including negotiation of key terms, drafting of agreements from approved templates, and negotiation of final agreement. Maintain good long-term relationship with industry partners, seek to achieve consensus with faculty on licensing strategy/terms, use clear language to avoid future disagreements. Seek terms that are win-win for both parties.
- Work with existing Technology Opportunities & Ventures (TOV) staff to ensure that licensees are compliant with agreements and that all reports/revenues due to be received arrive in a timely manner.
- Adhere to all NYULH and TOV policies, protocols (including safety protocols), and behavioral standards, as well as any relevant NYU-specific policies related to intellectual property licensing.
Minimum Qualifications:
To qualify you must have a Bachelor's degree in science or engineering; minimum three years of experience in business development, developing and marketing of new technologies and negotiating research and license agreements, or related activities. Excellent administrative, negotiating, interpersonal and communication skills necessary. Ability to work effectively with senior management, academic scientists, and executives from industry, and to achieve consensus and promote good long-term relationships.
Preferred Qualifications:
PhD, MS and/or MBA, direct experience with technology transfer, CLP or RTTP designations are highly desirable.
Qualified candidates must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.

NYU Langone Health provides a salary range to comply with the New York City Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $92,066.00 - $105,303.12 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
