Secondary Arts Teacher and Coordinator

Language of instruction: French preferred

The position is a full time (100%) annual position that comprises both teaching and coordination responsibilities. This role reports to the Middle School Division Head. This individual works closely with the Dean of Teaching and Learning, Educational Leaders, and teachers.

Job Summary

Approximately 50% of this role is comprised of teaching visual arts. Some teaching of drama and/or music is an option based on the candidate profile. The coordination responsibility spans the Pre-K to 8, with an emphasis on supporting drama and music teachers, and art projects with Lower School. The coordinator announces, facilitates, and helps organize projects, exhibitions, and performances at the lower and middle school level. Leadership, strong organization, and collaboration are essential skills. The Arts Coordinator is also the Graduation and Yearbook Coordinator, and typically takes on a Grade 8 Advisory. The role includes teaching assignments and participation in teacher planning and collaboration.

The Arts Teaching Program responsibilities include:

  • Prepare classes, participate in curriculum development and harmonization with colleagues
  • Supervise students during recesses and lunches assigned
  • Teach all students
  • Participate in meetings
  • Participate in events
  • Hold an advisory role
  • Supervise all students during teaching times
  • Participate in student life

All duties above are included in the teacher and coordinator contract. A schedule of meetings is provided to teachers.

More specifically, in addition to the general FASPS Teacher , the Secondary Art Teacher will

  • Communicate with families through a variety of forums
  • Support colleagues with artistic endeavors and performances
  • Facilitate whole school art projects, exhibitions, and days
  • Maintain order and cleanliness of art space and storage, placing orders to keep stock in place
  • Observe colleagues, providing coaching and feedback to support their development
  • Impart a personal passion for the creation of art
  • Show engagement in collaboration and teamwork
  • Participate in overnight trips annually
  • Put in place class management and project organization
  • Rely on knowledge of pedagogical practices to differentiate, engage in portfolio work, interdisciplinary learning and learn in mixed age groups
  • Leverage technology in the classroom
  • Have an interest in teaching in a bilingual, multicultural environment
  • Use varied assessment models adapted to the subject of art, and according the FASPS Assessment Policy, respecting guidelines and deadlines for assessing and reporting
  • Align teaching to French National Education competencies
  • Harmonize French National Education competencies with colleagues of other subject areas, with regard for Art History components
  • Maintain student safety when using art tools and materials
  • Ability to do the duties assigned
  • Stay informed of current trends in art and share them with students, inspiring innovation
  • Organize field trips to discover art within Seattle area, and beyond
  • Incorporate positive discipline strategies and/or restorative practices

Qualifications:

Required language: French with intermediate or higher level of English, or English with understanding of Francophone Culture.

The ability to pass a background check is required.

French secondary certification required if not a US Citizen.

A minimum of 3 to 5 years working in arts within varied settings is required. Applicants should have some Middle School teaching experience, a desire to be part of an internationally diverse community of teachers and learners, with a willingness to adapt to the unique program at FASPS. Successful candidates will be passionate about working with students, have knowledge of current educational practices and strategies and be able to use flexible and innovative pedagogical techniques appropriate to a variety of learning styles. A respect and promotion of bilingual education is required.
