Application Developer Jobs

The Application Developer will provide maintenance support and application development for the Iowa Reading Research Center (IRRC) by writing and maintaining in house educational research application; Monitor site security, manage updates, and support online learning staff’s administration of the IRRC’s learning management system (Moodle);Work with Director and Project Manager to develop new applications, functionalities, and plug-ins; Utilize APIs or other web services to integrate data between applications; Support IRRC database administrator by controlling database access and providing reports on data as needed; Review, edit, and provide feedback to undergraduate student programmers; and, utilize software development techniques to manage software updates, releases, design database structures, document code, and track work.

This is a specified term appointment. May be eligible for renewal.

Specific Job Duties And Tasks

• Consult with IRRC Director, Project Manager, and other internal and external clients to define functional/technical specifications for assigned projects.
• Provide IRRC team and website users with support for routine issues.
• Provide base-level security, application installation and configuration, and backups for a small number of systems.
• Make recommendations on new applications or updates to improve the research processes of the center.
• Configure and customize applications.
• Utilize unit’s tools and techniques for assigned projects. May write program code or use vendor tools to create scripts, configure applications, or reports.
• Manage customer relationships for online platforms and services.
• May train, provide direction, assignments, feedback, coaching, and mentoring of students or newer employees in a specific area of expertise.
• Review and analyze code or site defects. Troubleshoot/debug/identify malfunctioning systems. Implement fixes. Debug and deploy fixes as necessary.
• Knowledge of project management concepts. Function as the lead for web development phases of the project timeline and report on project status.

About The Iowa Reading Research Center

At the Iowa Reading Research Center, we apply current research for the development and dissemination of best practices in literacy so that every child in Iowa will achieve reading proficiency. The purpose of the Iowa Reading Research Center is to improve the literacy proficiency of pre-kindergarten through twelfth-grade students. All efforts of the Iowa Reading Research Center are conducted in collaboration with educators, parents, community representatives, and policy makers. Results have a direct application to literacy policy and education in Iowa.

Education Requirement

• Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent combination of education and related experience.

Required Qualifications

• Extensive experience communicating technical information effectively to technical and non-technical staff at the verbal, written, and presentation levels.
• Extensive experience with the following programming and database languages – PHP, JavaScript, SQL, Python, HTML, CSS, and Bootstrap.
• Basic knowledge of web accessibility guidelines (WCAG 2.1).
• Ability to manage complex information with attention to detail and high level of accuracy.
• 1-3 years' experience in the development and support of web applications used by non-technical customers to support and enhance business processes.
• Working experience utilizing third-party APIs or web services to access data as XML or JSON and incorporate into applications.
• Working experience with GitHub/GitLab, VMWare, MySQL Workbench, and command line.

Desired Qualifications

• Working experience with educational technology applications.
• Working experience with web hosting, certificates, DNS, and domain management.
• Working experience administering third party applications; including user management, security, upgrades, and database moves.
